ICOMOS CIF Participation in the UNESCO World Conference on Culture and Arts Education 2024

ICOMOS CIF is delighted to contribute to the UNESCO World Conference on Culture and Arts Education (WCCA 2024) from 13 to 15 February  in Abu DhabiUnited Arab Emirates, at the Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Centre (ADNEC). 

The conference brings together Culture and Education Ministers from around the world in order to adopt the new Framework for Culture and Arts Education, getting together also relevant intergovernmental-organizations, UN agencies and UNESCO networks and partners in the field of culture and education. We will be sharing good practices and innovative ideas, and strengthening a global alliance for culture and arts education.

Re-shaping Education for and through Cultural Heritage: Setting Global Networks and Disseminating Good Practices for Urban Sustainable Development

ICOMOS CIF was selected by UNESCO to run a side event during the conference, partnering with WHITRAP Shanghai UNESCO Category 2 Centre and Tongji University College of Architecture and Urban Planning (CAUP) – Shanghai (China) and the Ibero-American Network of UNESCO Chairs.

The event focuses on education for the protection and conservation of architectural heritage, in particular in an urban context and its influence in sustainable development. It is an opportunity to reflect on traditional and emerging educational models concerning cultural heritage education that take also in account the challenges of climate change. It presents what constitutes good practice, including the integration of traditional knowledge and methods with new technologies, particularly AI. Case studies concerning urban heritage conservation in Asia and urban sustainable development in South America will are presented and discussed with an international audience. The event also highlights the need to build up global collaborative networks to deal with shared challenges and exchange experiences involving teaching, learning, research and action.

The panel discussion is organized as a follow up activity of several recent related activities:

•The contribution of ICOMOS-CIF President to the UNESCO Multi stakeholder Dialogue in May 2023 and the outcomes of the ICOMOS-CIF 2023 Symposium in Athens:” Design and Delivery of Education and Training for the Conservation of Built Heritage”;

•The setting up of the International Network for Urban Heritage Conservation in Higher Education Institutions (UHC-HEI) initiated by WHITRAP Shanghai and the College of Urban Planning (CAUP) Tongji University, Shanghai, PR China in September 2023;

•The online side event ‘Cultural Heritage as a development tool: Cultural heritage and Education’, organized by Pontificia Universidad Católica de Valparaíso in January 2024.
